Hollywood megastar Tom Cruise's announcement that he will finance future films with backing from two unnamed hedge funds is just the latest in a trend of firms trying to get into the film-making business. So reports The Wall Street Journal.

Sumner Redstone, chairman of Viacom, the parent company of Paramount Pictures, has announced that his company will no longer be working with Cruise following some controversial behavior by the star. In response, Cruise and production partner Paula Wagner said they will be working with hedge fund backing from now on and that they've raised $100 million.

Although hedge funds and institutional investors have recently put more than $4 billion into film projects, some see such financing diminishing. For example, Stark Investments has backed away from its film foray after helping to make the movies "Poseidon" and "V for Vendetta," neither of which performed as hoped. And Legendary Pictures, a new entity backed by private equity money, has had an up-and-down experience, backing a winner in "Batman Begins", but also investing in movies such as "Lady in the Water" and the "Ant Bully", which proved disappointing.

One firm that seems to have done well is Melrose Investors, a partnership between Merrill Lynch and Paramount Pictures. That partnership has lined up two dozen films to invest in, the most recent of which was Cruise's "Mission Impossible III". Two sources say the Melrose partnership looks likely to produce annual returns of 10% or more.

James Stern, CEO with Endgame Entertainment, says that hedge funds likely will change how they approach these deals when they see that the returns they expected are difficult to attain.

Tom Cruise has reportedly put fiancée Katie Holmes on a grueling and intensive fitness regime in order to get the 27-year-old actress in shape for their wedding. The news comes two weeks after the birth of TomKat's first child, Suri.

According to the South African website Tonight, Tom Cruise has "allegedly signed his fiancée up to a 'Buff Brides' exercise course to help her shed about 18kg before their upcoming nuptials."

Katie Holmes is said to be proud of Tom's commitment to her and to getting her fit again after the birth of Suri. However, Tom Cruise didn't make a fan out of Katie's father Martin. iAfrica reports that Martin Holmes told Reveal magazine that "My daughter needs rest, relaxation and recuperation. Katie is already doing exercises to build up her back and shoulders and I simply can't go along with what is happening."

The now multi-millionaire actor used to hitch rides with the men picking up sex workers outside New York's Holland Tunnel when he was a struggling actor.

Cruise - who celebrated the birth of his first child with fiancée Katie Holmes last week - revealed to Britain's Sunday Times newspaper: 'There were prostitutes, who used to be around the tunnel, who knew me. They'd see me and they'd go, 'Look, I'll pick up a john and you jump in'. So I'd ride through the tunnel to New Jersey.

'The driver's a little like, 'What's this guy doing in the back seat?' But he saw I'm just this 18-year-old kid. I didn't look dangerous.

'And they didn't do anything sexual in front of me. I'd get out in New Jersey and say, 'Thank you very much'. Then I'd hitchhike home.'

Tom Cruise and fiance Katie Holmes greeted screaming fans at Yahoo's corporate headquarters in Sunnyvale, Calif., where he was a guest speaker.

Cruise was seen spoofing his infamous Oprah appearance by jumping on a chair, and was all smiles as he arm-wrestled Yahoo CEO Terry Semel.

Cruise also had to apologize for being 45 minutes late, telling the crowd that he has never been late anywhere. Tom flew to the event in his P51, a WWII fighter plane and apparently encountered some bad weather along the way. "They said the weather would be clear, but it wasn't," he told the crowd.

Cruise told Japanese reporters in Los Angeles he already had a script in mind for the next installment in the franchise and would like it to be set in Tokyo, the Kyodo news agency reported Friday.

'Mission Impossible 3' opens July 8 in Japan. It opens May 5 in the United States.

The March 9 issue of Rolling Stone includes a piece called "Inside Scientology," which reports on how "the church has a storied reputation for squelching its critics through litigation, and, according to some reports, intimidation." Sources at Wenner Media, which publishes Rolling Stone, say they know all about it. Scientologist Tom Cruise was supposed to appear on the cover of Men's Journal, another Jann Wenner publication. According to sources, Cruise wanted the Rolling Stone story killed, and, when Wenner's team said no, Cruise bailed on Men's Journal's May cover before the writer (a freelancer named Kate Rockland) even got to him. Wenner Media didn't return calls, but Cruise's camp, reached via e-mail, was forthright about its issues with Wenner's magazines. "We were never confirmed to be the cover, we were in discussions," says representative Arnold Robinson. As to whether the Rolling Stone story was the deal-breaker, he would only say: "We were aware of it."

Tom Cruise is eyeing several high-profile studio features for his next film, reports Variety. He's expected to make a decision within the next two weeks.The lead horse is the new take on the 1957 Western 3:10 to Yuma, which James Mangold (Walk the Line) will direct this summer, with Cathy Konrad producing for Columbia Pictures. Cruise became interested in the film after Stuart Beattie, who wrote the Cruise-Jamie Foxx starrer Collateral, turned in a rewrite of the script by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas. The other most mentioned candidate is Fool's Gold, a Warner Bros. drama about a divorced couple who rekindle romance during a treasure hunt. Andy Tennant is ready to direct a script by John Claflin and Daniel Zelman.

On E! News we learn that despite those nasty tabloid rumors, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have not split up and are still very much in love. Why do we know this? Because they were hugging on a boat in Australia. At least, they were hugging when the cameras were on them, but I truly believe they were simply caught in the middle of a twelve-hour non-stop boat hugging session. That's how unbelievably in love these two creepy, ever-smiling freaks are, and I don't think the mere fact that only mental patients look that ecstatic all the time should dilute our notion of their love one bit.

According to Quigley Publishing Co., Cruise has topped the list for the seventh time in his career. The list of the highest paid people in the cinema industry has been drawn up yearly since 1932, and the top 10 earners have been named.

The following comes from this blog. I'm glad I was too lazy to type up all these movies. Someone has already done it for me! The blogger who wrote this noticed this phenomenon of Tom Cruise running and wrote about it 2 years before I did. Kudos!

Tom Cruise -- and a pair of running shoes

It has been an oft-spoken topic between me and Ari...the topic of Tom Cruise and his movie roles...and his acting abilities (or lack thereof). We joke that his way of "acting out" fear, anxiety, anger...is to RUNNNNN. In fact, he runs an awful lot in his movies. There is always a scene in which he's running (and it's not integral to the plot) to exhibit an emotion that he cannot figure out another way to exhibit.

Usually, this running shot ends up in a close-up face shot...we are drawn into his character, feel his energy, his frustration, fear, we are one with his running body...NOT.

A list of examples:

Jerry Maguire -- runs home to his Renee Zellwegger, runs to Cuba Gooding Jr.

Vanilla Sky -- runs through the streets of a deserted Times Square

Eyes Wide Shut -- doesn't he run through the streets of NYC?

The Firm -- I recall him running in this film, looking haggard. Something about finding out about the evilness of his lawfirm...

Top Gun -- okay, he doesn't actually run here. But he does ride his motorcycle very fast.

A Few Good Men -- doesn't he run through the rain in this film?

Mission Impossible -- he runs.

Minority Report -- and runs.

(don't get me wrong though -- I am a fan of his...we just think it's funny that he runs so much in his movies -- when we watch his films, we ask, "When does he run?")

TOM Cruise's onetime alternative medicine consultant — a Church of Scientology member and advocate — is the subject of a six-month investigation by Los Angeles police, who are asking the district attorney to indict her and a colleague for fraud, grand theft and malpractice.

The LAPD's Health Authority Law Enforcement Task Force, which investigates illegal medical practices, presented its case against Scientologist Feline Butcher to the local DA for review yesterday. The findings involve liver cancer patient Clive McLean — a veteran staff photographer for Hustler founder Larry Flynt — who died in March at age 60 after receiving allegedly bogus "treatment" from the unfortunately named Butcher and an unlicensed physician to whom she had referred him, David Chua.

"We didn't at first know that she was a Scientologist, but then we heard that she made her employees take courses in it," Erica McLean, Clive's widow, tells PAGE SIX's Steve Garbarino. Neither McLean belonged to the church.

"She said that Chua could cure my husband with these magic drops and potions and vitamin drips — and this silly machine," Erica says. "We spent at least $150,000 on all this, and my husband's health was not improving. They told him to not take chemo-therapy, and so we didn't.

"I eventually threw [Chua] off our property when I realized we were being had, but he still was billing us for these magic pills," Erica says.

According to detectives, the alleged pill-purveyor vanished after hearing of the investigation. The LAPD task force's Sgt. Steve Opferman says, "The McLeans were led to believe that the man was a licensed practitioner." If indictments are handed up, Opferman said charges would include fraud, grand theft and malpractice against both Butcher and Chua.

Butcher could not be reached for comment, but has previously said the charges are unfounded. Greg LaClaire, vice president of the Scientologist's Celebrity Centre in Hollywood, said he was not familiar either with the case or with Butcher.
